GAPS & HAPS Series Proximity Sensors

The new technology, which is available on two new lines of proximity sensors, General Aerospace Proximity Sensors (GAPS) and Harsh Aerospace Proximity Sensors (HAPS), outperforms standard proximity sensors by offering continuous, real-time sensor health monitoring and diagnostics, including the ability to detect system malfunctions faster or discern when sensors provide false positive or false negative signals.

Key to the enhanced sensing performance is Honeywell’s proprietary Fixed Amplitude Variable Current Oscillator (FAVCO), an improvement to the Eddy Current Killed Oscillators (ECKO) technology platform, the current standard for aerospace applications. FAVCO utilizes a continuously oscillating IHM circuit which makes it possible to detect failure modes that traditional ECKO sensors cannot. For example, in the traditional ECKO sensor, if a coil breaks or an electrical component faults (stops the oscillator), the sensor cannot determine if the target is near or if there is a fault that stopped the oscillation; in this case, it may indicate an incorrect target position. With sensors built with the FAVCO technology, if the coil breaks, the oscillation will stop and the circuit will change the output to a fault mode rather than the incorrect state

  • Enhanced vibration ruggedness: Capable of withstanding extremely high vibration applications
  • Environmentally rugged: Fully hermetic packages provide long-term reliability in very harsh environments by eliminating the potential for contamination of the sensor from the application environment. In addition, Honeywell has developed an innovative method to environmentally seal wire-lead (pigtail) configurations
  • Integral Health Monitoring Capability: Optional third output state to indicate the health of the sensor  (whether it is healthy or failed). Reduces maintenance time, reduces delayed flights, and lowers overall maintenance cost across the life of the aircraft
  • Non-contact design: Utilizes non-contact technology to sense the presence or absence of a target regardless of the dirty, harsh environment in which it is placed, eliminating mechanical failure mechanisms, reducing wear, minimizing downtime, increasing durability, and increasing reliability

Potential Applications:

  • GAPS Proximity Sensors may be used on the following general aircraft applications: doors, landing gear, hydraulics, primary surface, rear stabilizer, gen actuators, airframe, rotary actuators, evacuation slides, cargo storage, and turbine speed/ACM. They also have military ground vehicle applications.
  • HAPS Proximity Sensors may be used on the following harsh aircraft applications: TRAS, valves, engine, actuators, nacelle, and canopies.
